Buying an Australian Cobberdog? How to Choose an Ethical Breeder
Not all breeders are equal. Here’s what to look for when choosing where to get your Cobberdog.
Choosing where to buy your Australian Cobberdog is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. The breeder you choose determines the health, temperament, and wellbeing of your new companion – and your experience as a new owner.
Look for MDBA Registration
The Master Dog Breeders and Associates (MDBA) is the only registry for the Australian Cobberdog. MDBA registration means the breeder is operating to the breed standard and subject to the association’s code of ethics.
Ask any potential breeder for their MDBA membership number and verify it on the MDBA website. Wattleview’s MDBA member number is 20223.
Transparent Health Testing
Every reputable Cobberdog breeder should be able to show you the health testing results for both parents of your puppy. This means:
Orivet Full Breed Profile – genetic disease screening and DNA profile
PennHIP – hip dysplasia assessment using distraction radiography
OFA – elbow dysplasia assessment
Results should be available on the breeder’s website or provided on request. Be wary of breeders who are vague about health testing or cannot produce documentation.
Puppy Raising Environment
Ask how and where the puppies are raised. Puppies raised underfoot in a home environment with regular human contact, structured enrichment, and early socialisation will have a significant developmental advantage over those raised in kennels with minimal stimulation.
Look for breeders who follow Puppy Culture, Badass Breeder, or similar evidence-based puppy raising protocols. These programmes have a meaningful impact on the neurological development, confidence, and trainability of puppies.
