Australian Cobberdog Sizes: Which Is Right for You?

A guide to the three officially recognised sizes — miniature, medium, and standard — and how to choose.

The Australian Cobberdog comes in three officially recognised sizes. Choosing the right size is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when applying for a puppy. Here’s what you need to know about each size and the lifestyle factors to consider.

Miniature (33–42 cm, 8–12 kg)

The smallest of the three sizes. Miniature Cobberdogs are usually under 12kg and measure 33–42cm at the shoulder. They are excellent for apartment living, smaller homes, or families who prefer a more portable companion.

Despite their smaller stature, miniatures have the same confident, sociable temperament as their larger counterparts. They are equally well-suited to therapy and assistance work.

At Wattleview, miniatures are among our most requested sizes. We recommend applying well in advance if a miniature is your preference.

Medium (43–51 cm, 12–20 kg)

The most popular size. Large enough to be a substantial family companion but small enough for comfortable indoor living. Mediums are versatile – active enough for hiking and outdoor adventures, equally happy on the couch.

Due to high demand, mediums often have the longest wait times. We recommend applying 6–9 months in advance if a medium is your preference.

Standard (52 cm+, 20 kg+)

The largest size. At Wattleview, our standard parents are approximately 25kg. Standards are wonderful for families wanting a larger, more imposing companion – particularly well-suited to therapy and assistance work where size and presence are an asset.

Standards may have slightly shorter wait times than mediums. If size is flexible, indicating willingness to consider a standard can improve your chances of an earlier placement.

What About In-Between Sizes?

Because the Australian Cobberdog is a breed in development, it is not uncommon for puppies to fall between the defined size categories. Terms like ‘small medium’ (approximately 41–47cm) or ‘large medium’ are used to describe these dogs. This is a natural part of the breeding process, not a defect.

Even experienced breeders cannot guarantee exact adult size. We provide our best estimate based on the parents, previous litters, and growth rates. If size is your primary consideration, we will always be transparent with you about our size estimates for a given litter.

How to Choose

Consider your living situation, activity level, whether you have young children, and how portable you need your dog to be. If size is your top priority, select it as your primary preference on your application.
