Are Australian Cobberdogs Hypoallergenic?

What you need to know about the Australian Cobberdog coat and allergies.

If you or someone in your household suffers from pet allergies, you’ve likely been told to look for a ‘hypoallergenic’ dog. The Australian Cobberdog is often recommended for allergy-sensitive families – but what does that actually mean, and is it accurate?

Do Australian Cobberdogs Shed?

Australian Cobberdogs have a very low to non-shedding fleece coat that produces very low to no odour. Unlike breeds with double coats – such as Labradors or Golden Retrievers – Cobberdogs do not shed seasonally. There is very little loose hair to deal with around your home.

This does not mean they are maintenance-free. Their coat requires regular brushing (two to three times per week at minimum) and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks to prevent matting can help keep their coat in an excellent condition.

Is Any Dog Truly Hypoallergenic?

No dog is 100% hypoallergenic. Most pet allergies are triggered not by fur itself but by a protein called Can f 1, found in dog saliva, skin cells (dander), and urine. All dogs produce this protein to some degree.

However, because Australian Cobberdogs shed very little and produce less airborne dander, they are significantly better suited to allergy-sensitive households than many other breeds. Many families who have not been able to tolerate other dogs live successfully with Cobberdogs.

Coat Types in Australian Cobberdogs

Australian Cobberdogs come in two main coat types:

  • Fleece coat (straight or wavy): Soft, silky, and low-shedding. The most common coat type and the most allergy-friendly. Requires regular brushing.
  • Wool coat: Tighter curl, even lower shedding, but requires more frequent grooming to prevent matting.

At Wattleview, we breed for fleece coats. Our dogs are tested for furnishings (the IC/RSPO2 gene) to ensure they carry the genetics for a low-shedding coat.

Testing Your Reaction
