Sending Wattleview Puppies Interstate: What to Expect

We place puppies with families across Australia. Here’s everything you need to know about interstate puppy transport.

We regularly place Wattleview puppies with families outside of NSW and the ACT – from Queensland and Victoria through to Western Australia and the Northern Territory. If you’re located interstate and wondering whether you can still apply, the answer is yes.

How Interstate Puppy Transport Works

Puppies travelling interstate in Australia are transported by air as accompanied or unaccompanied cargo, depending on the airline and route. The process is straightforward and well-established, and Wattleview has experience facilitating interstate placements.

Puppies travel in an IATA-compliant crate. Flight times within Australia are typically 1–3.5 hours, and puppies are generally calm travellers at 8–9 weeks of age.

What’s Required for Interstate Travel?

Requirements vary slightly by destination state, but generally include:

  • Microchip: All Wattleview puppies are microchipped before leaving. Required for interstate and international travel.
  • Vet health certificate: A certificate from our veterinarian confirming the puppy is fit to fly. Issued within 10 days of travel.
  • Vaccinations: Age-appropriate vaccinations completed prior to travel. Wattleview puppies receive their first C5 vaccination before going home.
  • IATA-approved crate: We supply an appropriately sized, airline-approved crate for travel. The crate becomes yours to keep.

Note for Western Australia and Tasmania:
WA and TAS have strict biosecurity requirements. Additional documentation may be required, and some agricultural products cannot accompany the puppy. We will advise you of any state-specific requirements at the time of placement.

Which Airlines Carry Puppies?

In Australia, pets are transported as live animal cargo rather than in-cabin. The major domestic carriers that accept live animal cargo include Qantas Freight (via QantasLink and Jetstar freight services) and Rex (Regional Express). Virgin Australia ceased live animal cargo in 2020.

We work with a trusted pet transport coordinator to book flights and ensure all documentation and crate requirements are met.

Pickup is from the cargo terminal at your destination airport. Most capital city airports have a dedicated animal handling area within the cargo facility.

The Cost of Interstate Transport

The cost of interstate air freight varies by destination and airline, typically ranging from $200–$600 depending on crate size and route. This is paid by the purchaser and arranged by Wattleview on your behalf, with costs confirmed before you commit.

You will also need to arrange your own travel to the cargo terminal for pickup. Most cargo terminals are open from early morning through to early evening. We will confirm the flight details and expected arrival time well in advance so you can plan accordingly.
