Understanding the distinction between a registered breed and a designer crossbreed.
If you’ve been researching low-shedding dogs, you’ve likely encountered both the Australian Cobberdog and the Labradoodle. At first glance, they may look similar – but they are fundamentally different types of dogs with very different breeding practices behind them.
The Australian Cobberdog is a registered pure breed in development, recognised exclusively by the Master Dog Breeders and Associates (MDBA). It was developed in Australia with the specific purpose of producing a consistent, health-tested companion and therapy dog with a predictable non-shedding coat and exceptional temperament.
MDBA-registered breeders breed to a strict standard. This means coat type, size, temperament, and health outcomes are far more consistent and predictable across generations than in a crossbreed.
A Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. It is not a registered breed – it is a mixed-breed dog. The original intent was to create a low-shedding guide dog candidate, but without a breed registry or standard, Labradoodles vary enormously in coat type, shedding, size, and temperament.
Some Labradoodles shed heavily, have wiry coats, or display temperament traits inconsistent with family or therapy work. Without health testing requirements enforced by a registry, the standard of breeding varies widely between breeders.
